The story of the First Congregational Church of Wareham is intimately tied to the history of the town of Wareham. For its first 96 years (1739–1833), church and town affairs were one, as was the common practice within the commonwealth. Following a shift in how municipal and religious governance operated, the church building continued to house both a sanctuary space and the town meeting hall for another nearly 75 years (1833–1904), remaining a central focal point of the religious and civic life of the community.
Our church gathered in 1739 with 15 men and 28 women and Rev. Rowland Thacher as minister. As the oldest church in Wareham, our history spans five different church buildings, over 30 ministers, and hundreds of faithful, dedicated members. Though damaged by fire twice and rebuilt four times, the church has stood fast as a witness to the faith of the town’s ancestors and as a reminder of the values and commitments of Wareham. At the same time, we are a forward-looking congregation in our programs, thinking, and local and global outreach—a community worshiping, serving, and sharing life together as a family united by our love of God, self, and neighbor.
Before rising to fame as an Academy Award-winning actress, Geena Davis and her family were active participants in the life of First Congregational Church in Wareham. Her father, William F. Davis, served the parish as a church deacon. Developing an early talent for music, Geena learned piano and organ, playing well enough during her teenage years to serve as an organist at the church. Her family’s dedicated service remains a fond piece of local history for both the church and the Wareham community.
